
Atlantic Stage, the only non-profit professional theatre company in the Myrtle Beach area will open its 2011-2012 season with the September 11 drama The Guys by Anne Nelson at the 79th Avenue Theatre in the Coastal Carolina University Myrtle Beach Education Center, 900 79th Ave N, Myrtle Beach, S.C. 29572. The play will preview on September 8 with opening night on September 9 and run through September 25.
Set just two weeks after the September 11 attacks, The Guys is based on the true story of a fire captain who lost eight men in the collapse of the World Trade Center and the editor who helps him prepare the eulogies he must deliver. This play about the enduring bonds of common humanity is recommended for adults and children ages 12 and older.
The Guys will be directed by Atlantic Stage’s Artistic Director Thom Penn. The cast will include actors David Russell and Jen Plants Currently teaching in the theatre program at Hood College in Frederick, M.D., Plants is a member of Actors' Equity Association and her regional acting credits include appearances with The Asolo Theatre Festival, Olney Theatre Center, Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, The Round House Theatre, Theater J, Imagination Stage, Southern Shakespeare Festival, and the Baltimore Shakespeare Festival, where as an artistic associate, she played diverse roles from an aerialist Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream to Portia in Julius Caesar. Recent roles include Linda in Fiction (Bickford Theatre) and Lulu in The Ruby Sunrise (New Jersey’s The Theater Project.)
New this season, Atlantic Stage is donating the proceeds from each production’s opening night to a local charity. All proceeds from the opening night of The Guys on September 9 will benefit the Horry County Firefighters Relief Fund. The HCFFRF is a 501c(3), non-profit organization dedicated to assisting and improving the lives of Horry County firefighters and/or rescue worker(s), their families and the community they serve. They will provide assistance to injured firefighters and/or rescue worker(s) and those affected by a life-threatening illness.
In the theatre lobby, memorabilia and personal effects and quotes from local firefighters who had personal involvement in the aftermath of 9/11 will be displayed. There will also be a photo essay by Louis Keiner and Lesley Etherson honoring the work of local firefighters.

Discounts are available for students, seniors (55+), the military and groups.
