When Boys & Girls High School comes to the Grand Strand next week for the Beach Ball Classic at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center, they bring not only their standing as one of New York City's top prep squads. They will be led by Ruth Lovelace, the only female head coach of a boys varsity basketball team in New York's Public Schools Athletic League, and one of only a handful of women coaching scholastic boys basketball anywhere in the country.
But Lovelace brings far more than this distinction and a 349-102 win/loss record to the hardwood. More importantly, she exudes a strong combination of compassion, commitment and caring for her players that helps them succeed off the court as well as on.
ESPN just ran a documentary on "Love," and for its program E:60 Rachel Nichols filed this report on what makes Lovelace special:
very great !
