April’s “Sounds of the Strand”

The House of Blues in North Myrtle Beach is the venue for April's headline music acts on the Grand Strand. Diverse offerings once again, spanning multiple genres and generations. They include:

  • "An Evening With" the Isley Brothers Featuring Ronald Isley AKA Mr. Biggs, Sun., April 1, 8 p.m. (Oldies/Soul) - The same group that gave us "Shout" in 1959 delivered "Contagious" with R. Kelly in 2001, making the Isley Brothers the first group ever to produce a hit in six consecutive decades on the Billboard Hot 100. Talk about perseverance and adaptability!
  • Hip Hop Is Dead Tour 2007 with Nas, Fri., April 6, 8 p.m. (Rap/Hip Hop) - Nas' 1994 debut album, Illmatic, is one of the most renowned in hip hop history. Predictably, the name of the title track for this tour (and Nas' current album) has generated plenty of controversy; the song features will.i.am from The Black Eyed Peas and samples "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" as performed by the Incredible Bongo Band (and originally performed in 1968 by Iron Butterfly).
  • Chairmen of the Board with The Executives, Sat., April 7, 7:30 p.m. (Beach Music) - Their debut single, "Give Me Just a Little More Time" (1970), was also their biggest hit.
  • Jagermeister Music Tour Featuring Stone Sour with Shadows Fall, Lacuna Coil and Souls Harbor, Fri., April 13, 7 p.m. (Rock/Hard Rock/Heavy Metal) - Stone Sour scored with its recent hit "Through Glass," and the video earned points with iconoclasts by mocking the Hollywood culture.
  • Edwin McCain with Low Stars, Sat., April 14, 8 p.m. (Adult Contemporary/Pop/Rock) - The pride of Greenvile, S.C. is back, this time as part of McCain's Lost in America tour. In the decade since its initial release, "I'll Be" has become a wedding reception staple.
  • Gov't Mule, Mon., April 16, 6 p.m. (Rock/Roots Rock/Jam Rock) - A regional favorite with an avid, loyal fan base. Check out the video for "Million Miles From Yesterday" from their Web site.
  • Flaming Lips with Stardeath & White Dwarfs, Tues., April 17, 7:30 p.m. (Alternative/Pop/Rock) - Remember "She Don't Use Jelly" from 1993? It was their only U.S. hit, but the Flaming Lips have since enjoyed continued success in the U.K. and Europe. How that compares to David Hasselhoff's cult-like following in Germany, I have no idea.
  • George Thorogood, Fri., April 20, 9 p.m. (Classic Rock/Blues) - "The World's Greatest Bar Band" is well into its fourth decade of being "Bad to the Bone."
  • Goo Goo Dolls, Tues., April 24, 8 p.m. (Rock/Pop) - Dizzy Up the Girl produced a slew of singles hits from 1998 to 2000, including "Slide," "Iris," "Black Balloon," "Dizzy" and "Broadway." Their current album, Let Love In, peaked at #9 on the Billboard U.S. charts.

Looking ahead to May, Travis Tritt and Mayfest on Main (featuring original members of The Beach Boys) currently top the slate. More information on those shows, and others, in next month's installment of "Sounds of the Strand."

Is Edwin McCain playing at the Monday After the Masters Concert with Hootie?  And is that show sold out?

Per the HOB ticket office, the Monday After the Masters post-tournament concert is a private, "invite-only" event, and tickets are not being sold to the general public for that one.

Props to Isley.  I don’t know of many other artists who’ve been able to maintain their popularity over such a long time period.  Tony Bennett, maybe?
