Beach Blog Restaurant Spotlight: Little Pigs Bar-B-Q

By Andre S. Pope

Take a step off the beaten path to enjoy one of the South's greatest assets: barbecue! With thousands of restaurants, Myrtle Beach offers culinary options to meet everyone's tastes. Since 1998, Little Pigs Bar-B-Q has been serving up some of the finest barbecue along the Grand Strand. From their pulled pork sandwiches to their baked beans and cole slaw, Pit Master Robert Huffling knows a thing or two on how to serve it up just right.

Huffling has been honing his barbecue skills for quite some time now. Before Little Pigs Bar-B-Q, Huffling learned the ways of "Q" in Greenville, South Carolina. Picking out choice cut meats, the right types of wood and even the perfect completing sauce takes some time to prefect. Huffling wanted to make sure it was just right before seeking out on his own. Seeing an opportunity awaiting in Myrtle Beach due to "lack of barbecue restaurants," Huffling found "his spot" in a little shop just off of Hwy. 17 Bypass. Little Pigs Bar-B-Q was born.

In the 11 years since, the folks at Little Pigs Bar-B-Q have turned this little restaurant into a working man's staple along the Grand Strand. Their bustling lunch crowd knows where to find good barbecue and packs the house on a regular basis. Like any well established southern barbecue house, there is a friendly smile and cold glass of iced tea welcoming all new faces who come through the doors.

The tantalizing barbecue aroma greets all patrons who enter. Hickory smoked hard wood serves as the basis for the smoking of their pork hams. The accent of smoke is the perfect complement to the lean cuts of "chopped to order" barbecue plates. Say Huffling, "Little Pigs is the only restaurant that I know that chops the barbecue right in front of you. We do it to ensure the freshness and leanness of the meat."

Fresh and lean it is! Top off your barbecue plate with any of Little Pigs distinct sauces (mustard, pepper vinegar, light tomato or spicy tomato) and one taste will prove they serve some of the tastiest "Q" around.

Their baked beans, potato salad, hush puppies and onion rings are a perfect addition to any meal. Wash it all down with a glass of their excellent sweet tea and you can see why Little Pigs Bar-B-Q is a locals' favorite.

Plan on getting there early. Little Pigs Bar-B-Q is a barbecue restaurant at heart, and with that comes a packed house. With a seating capacity of around 50 and closing time at 8 p.m., you want to make sure you get the "Q" before it runs out!
