Big River Celebrates Twin Anniversary of Conway-based Theatre Group

By Lenore McKenzie-Morris

Huckleberry Finn struts his stuff in true southern style at the Main Street Theater this month in the Theatre of the Republic's production of "Big River."

Randall Jones' portrayal of Finn is a delightful addition to the theater company's twin anniversary celebration. The company, which marks its 40th anniversary this year, is also celebrating its 10-year anniversary in Conway at the Main Street Theater.

Clearly enjoying the role of the irrepressible Mark Twain character, Jones carries his solo vocal performances easily, and hams it up a bit in the true nature of the adventurous Finn. The musical cast was coached by Andy Fowler into an energetic rendition of Roger Miller's diverse songs. Tim Wilson's blues rendition as Pap Finn is a memorable moment in the story. The variety of songs and skillful delivery will ensure that everyone comes away with a favorite memory.

The large cast is drafted to dance throughout the production, with Saundra Adams cleverly arranging for Wilson to stagger on cue. Young performers dance their way through the formation of Tom Sawyer's gang while singing, and the entire company seems to be on stage moving in this lively production from time to time. As choreographer, Adams was met with the challenge of taking the cast of 30 through its steps.

The theater company has no problem attracting talent to its auditions and stage support teams.

"We're very successful," said executive director Tim McGhee. "I don't consider ourselves a typical community theater. With Myrtle Beach being so transient and Coastal Carolina University nearby, we always have new talent come through the door. People are always looking for a place to practice their craft and they look to us to do so."

McGhee said the company's lighting, design and sound are always first-class. And the comfortable theater serves as home base for a full year of productions.

"We are fortunate to have our own building," McGhee said.

Located in Conway's historic district, the theater lights up Main Street with its marquee and provides a lively aspect of community energy to all of Horry County. This year's roster included 10 shows, but the group has managed as many as 15 in previous years. The popular venue nears capacity crowds at almost every performance.

"Big River" opens the season this month, and will be followed by performances of "The Civil War" in October, "Holiday on Main Street" in December, "Noises Off" in February, "Cinderella" in March and "The Producers" in June.

Great seats are still available for evening performances of "Big River," McGhee said, but only a few Sunday matinee seats remain. Performances are slated for 8 p.m. this Wednesday through Saturday, Aug. 26-29, and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 30. Advance tickets are $18. Tickets at the door are $22. The "Big River" show is sponsored by Larry Paul.

The theater company will celebrate its 40th anniversary in October with a gala at the home of Joe Garrell and Kathy Foxworth in Tabor City, N.C. Tickets for the black-tie-optional event are $100. Call 843-488-0821 for more information.
