Broadway at the Beach’s First Holiday Harvest Enjoyed by Thousands

Holiday Harvest photo.JPGBroadway at the Beach concluded its inaugural "Holiday Harvest" fall festival and welcomed the 2009 holiday season with a Tree Lighting Ceremony on Saturday, November 7. The festival, which focused on South Carolina community pride and showcasing South Carolina's agricultural industry, foods, wines and culinary expertise, was attended by thousands during its 15 days.

"It was exciting for Broadway at the Beach to host this first Holiday Harvest festival and we're looking forward to next year," said Michelle Sutton, vice president of sales & marketing for Burroughs & Chapin Company, Inc., which owns and operates Broadway at the Beach. "From the first day, we drew crowds of both locals and visitors. They watched the Carolina Cook-Off, shopped at the Farmers Market, and enjoyed celebrities enthusiastically competing in the pumpkin pie eating contest. The hay maze and the pumpkin pyramid were a hit and the kids really enjoyed the bounce houses. And, with live musical entertainment and educational presentations about our state, there was something fun for everyone."

The Holiday Harvest festival included hay rides, pumpkin decorating, face painting, wine tastings of selected South Carolina wines and a beer garden. On October 31, children came to the festival to Trick or Treat, enjoy a haunted Hay Maze, and hear tales of South Carolina ghosts.

As November began and the Christmas season drew nearer, the Holiday Harvest festival was transformed into a Christmas wonderland and hay rides became sleigh rides. The festival concluded with a spectacular Tree Lighting Ceremony that featured the Irish Tenors, a Gospel Choir and other entertainers.

"This is the first time that a festival of this size has ever been held to showcase the best of South Carolina's agricultural community," said Sutton. "Because Broadway at the Beach was originally conceived as a festival marketplace, it is the perfect venue for Holiday Harvest. We easily accommodated all the various activities and large displays like the antique tractors and Farmers Market. We have the space to grow the event and we anticipate that it will become a South Carolina tradition."

The dates for the 2010 Holiday Harvest will be announced later in November. For more information, visit the Holiday Harvest Web site.
