
The first annual “Build Your Own Boat Race” will be held Saturday, March 26, at Flying Fish Public Market & Grill at Barefoot Landing in North Myrtle Beach. Multiple awards will be given and all proceeds will benefit the Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach and the Department of Natural Resources Wildlife and Marine Division.
Boat builders will start at 9:30 a.m. and can work until 3 p.m, when the boats will be inspected. The race will begin with staggered starts at 3:15 p.m.
An oyster roast and pig pickin’ After Party will start at 3:30 p.m at the Flying Fish. All-you-can-eat wristbands can be purchased for $15 or half-off for all contestants and vendors.
The five award categories will include: The Driest Team After the Race; Fastest Finish Line Time; Fastest Build Time that Completes the Race Successfully; Most Soundly Built and a creative award for the Best Boat Idea. These awards will be announced during the After Party at 6 p.m.
All contestants assembling or racing boats must be at least 14 years old and have a legal guardian present. All boats must also have at least one adult on board during the race. Distress flags must be kept in the boat during the race in case of an emergency or sinking vessel. Commercial rafts, raft parts, hulls of canoes or kayaks may not be used; everything on the boat must be homemade.
The boat race will be held rain or shine; no refunds will be given in the event of a no-show. All proceeds will benefit the Department of Natural Resources and the Humane Society of North Myrtle Beach.
