Sometimes nothing fills your culinary needs quite like a big juicy burger, and the Myrtle Beach area is full of great choices.
Ailsa Pub, 4601 Aaran Court at Legends Golf Course off U.S. 501 between Conway and Myrtle Beach, 843-236-5530.
You'll need a big appetite for Chef Ryan Coffindaffer's Fugi Burger that is so large it has to be held together with a skewer. It's stuffed with shrimp and goat cheese, and then topped with banana peppers, bacon, mushrooms, avocado, lettuce, tomato and sea salt, and served with sweet potato fries.
Bay Naturals, 7611 N. Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach, 843-448-0011.
You can have a "beef" veggie burger or a "chicken" veggie burger, and there is a choice of organic fixins such as red leaf lettuce, tomato, red onion, clover sprouts, shredded carrot, vegan mayonnaise, ketchup and spicy or yellow mustard. And forget about fries with your burger here - the choices are organic tortilla chips, cucumber quinoa salad, vegan Red Bliss potato salad and raw beet salad.
Burger Brothers, 1518 4th Ave., Conway, 843-458-4317.
This is where you can get a thick and juicy hand-patted burger just like you'd make for yourself at home. The double cheeseburger has been described as, "Like a Big Mac, only better." If you're feeling particularly hungry, you may be interested in the three-pound burger. It costs $30, and people often buy one to take to a party or for entire families to split for dinner. The owners also have a Burger Challenge where if someone can eat it all at the restaurant within a certain amount of time, it's free. Note: this restaurant is closed on Saturdays and Sundays.
Burky’s Grill, 3901 N. Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach, 843-626-2888.
Burky’s is locally famous for thin burgers with lacy, crispy edges, piles of crispy shoestring fries, loaded baked potatoes and great milkshakes. It has a 1950s diner theme, and on summer Friday nights they have classic car cruise-ins.
Carolina Skillet, 1129 Third Ave., Conway, 843-488-0577.
Picture this: historic downtown Conway, walking history tour, shopping in unique stores, exquisite burger at Carolina Skillet. Sounds like a perfect day!
Hard Rock Café, 1322 Celebrity Circle, Broadway at the Beach, Myrtle Beach, 843-946-0003.
There is a good reason Hard Rock Cafe staffers call their burger The Legendary Burger - it rocks! Also, this summer to celebrate its 40th birthday, the Myrtle Beach pyramid-shaped Hard Rock Cafe has a strong summer lineup of live music through July 3.
Joey Dogg's, 1818 U.S. 17 Business N., Surfside Beach, across from Ocean Lakes Campground, 843-238-JOEY (5639).
This place is known for hot dogs, but locals also go there for the burgers, which are made with beef ground fresh on-site. If you like chili on your burgers, theirs is made from a 150-year-old Coney Island recipe. Fries are hand-cup and onion rings are hand-dipped, and the Super Duper burgers have Cheddar or blue cheese in their centers.
Limpin' Jane's, 713 Front St., Georgetown, 843-485-4953.
Kobe Beef Sliders are an awesome appetizer to share, but they also make a terrific entree. You get three mini premium-beef burgers served with red onion slices, fresh local greens and horseradish cream. Order a side dish of fresh tomatoes - the chef gets them locally - and put slices on the burgers. Talk about great tastes!
Oliver's Restaurant, 1301 U.S. 501 Business, a little east of the Waccamaw River outside Conway, 843-347-3602.
A quintessential old-school Southern diner, Oliver's Restaurant used to be known as the frillier and more retro Oliver's Luncheonette. It was founded in 1964 by George A. Oliver Jr., and now George A. Oliver III is helping his Dad out. At lunchtime Oliver's is known for its burgers, which you can get with one patty or two and cheese or not. If you get it "all the way" it comes with mustard, onions and chili, but other toppings such as lettuce and tomato are also available. They grind their own meat, and the piping hot burgers are wrapped in foil and slid into white paper bags. Dine in, carry out or drive through.
Quigley's Pint and Plate, 257 Willbrook Blvd., Pawleys Island, 843-237-7010.
Quigley's has a much-celebrated Vegan Burger made with mushrooms, black-eyed peas, wild rice and more.
Ruth's Chris Steak House, 8761 Marina Parkway, Myrtle Beach, 843-839-9500.
You won't see this in the Ruth's Chris online menu, because it's available only at the bar or in the lounge: Kobe Beef Sliders. Like at Limpin' Jane's, these mini burgers are delectably juicy and tender. When the chef serves them at a huge annual culinary event, the Ruth's Chris booth invariably has a line at least 50 people deep all night long.
The Short Bar, 4078 U.S. 17 Business, Murrells Inlet, 843-357-4100.
How could you resist the Evil Klown Burger? For $10, you get a gigantic and juicy turkey burger seasoned with chorizo and topped with two cheeses and a grilled Slim Jim, plus veggies and tomatillo salsa. It's held together with a child's pinwheel speared through the middle.
