Buzz Aldrin to Lead Strand’s Largest-Ever Parade

Astronaut Buzz Aldrin will lead Myrtle Beach's Military Appreciation Days parade on May 29, the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce announced Monday.

Aldrin will serve as the celebrity grand marshal. Aldrin appeared in the first episode of ABC’s 10th season of “Dancing with the Stars,” but is most widely known for his aeronautical career. A graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross for his U.S. Air Force combat missions in Korea. He was selected by NASA in 1963 into the third group of astronauts and, on July 20, 1969, joined Neil Armstrong as the first to set foot on the moon as part of the Apollo 11 mission, for which he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

The parade, which will run from 27th Avenue North to Ninth Avenue North, will feature more than 25 parade floats, eight giant helium-filled balloon characters, marching and military bands and more. It begins at 10:30 a.m. May 29, and is one of several events planned for Memorial Day weekend.

“This will be the biggest parade Myrtle Beach has ever hosted,” said Brad Dean, MBACC president and CEO.
