Charlotte Observer Offers “Top 5” Rankings for Myrtle Beach Golf

Alan Nichols, a Maryland journalist and travel feature writer for GolfLink.com, has a special affinity for golf destinations in the Southeast. Recently, the Charlotte Observer asked Nichols to rank courses in the Grand Strand area by three key attributes: top five opening holes, top five finishing holes, and the five most scenic courses.

Here's what Nichols came up with:

Top 5 opening holes

  1. King's North at Myrtle Beach National, Myrtle Beach
  2. West Course at The Pearl Golf Links, Sunset Beach
  3. Tiger's Eye, Ocean Isle Beach
  4. Tradition Golf Club, Pawleys Island
  5. Heathland at The Legends, Myrtle Beach

Top 5 finishing holes

  2. TPC of Myrtle Beach, Murrells Inlet
  3. King's North at Myrtle Beach National, Myrtle Beach (pictured)
  4. Prestwick Country Club, Myrtle Beach
  5. Love Course at Barefoot Resort, North Myrtle Beach

5 most scenic courses

  1. TPC of Myrtle Beach, Murrells Inlet
  2. Tidewater Golf Club, North Myrtle Beach
  3. Farmstead Golf Links, Calabash
  4. Fazio Course at Barefoot Resort
  5. Pawleys Plantation, Pawleys Island

These are Nichols' choices; what are yours? Let us know!

I agree with most of these—especially Pawleys Plantation which plays along the salt marsh across from Pawleys Island. Spectacular views. But I can’t believe that Caledonia was not mentioned among the most scenic or that Willbrook’s opening home from the blue or white tees was not spotlighted.

I believe the Fazio Course at Barefoot Resort is the best on the beach. The Love Course at Barefoot gets a lot of press but the Fazio Course has everything you want in a top ranked course. The Norman course doesn’t get enough credit as well. This course, although it runs thru a lot of the condos, is one of my favorites as well.
