Family Kingdom Drawing National Attention

TripAdvisor users and editors have spoken: Myrtle Beach's seaside amusement park is among the nation's 10 best outside Orlando.

The rankings put Family Kingdom Amusement Park in prominent company with some heavy hitters:

  1. Hershey Park, Hershey, Pennsylvania
  2. Busch Gardens, Tampa, Florida
  3. Cedar Point Amusement Park, Sandusky, Ohio
  4. Six Flags Fiesta Texas, San Antonio, Texas
  5. Family Kingdom Amusement Park, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina
  6. Six Flags Great Adventure, Jackson, New Jersey
  7. Paramount's Kings Island, Kings Island, Ohio
  8. Ober Gatlinburg Ski Resort and Amusement Park, Gatlinburg, Tennessee
  9. Coney Island Park, Brooklyn, New York
  10. Paramount's Carowinds, Charlotte, North Carolina

"With an incredible oceanfront water park combined with its amusement park, Family Kingdom is well worth the trip," says TripAdvisor. "Visitors will want to take a ride on the 'Swamp Fox' coaster or the thrilling 'Slingshot Drop Zone' before cooling off on the lazy river, wild water flumes or speed slides. A TripAdvisor member commented, 'What a blast this place is! We went up and down the water slides like we were 10-years-old!'"

A couple items of note here:

  • From the press release: "These amusement parks feature much more than cotton candy and carousels," said Michele Perry, director of communications for TripAdvisor. "Travelers like thrills but not spills - TripAdvisor reviews were littered with comments about the importance of amusement park cleanliness." Maybe I'd gotten too used to amusement park cleanliness resembling more of a traveling carnival, but Family Kingdom certainly fits Ms. Perry's description. When I took the kids there last month, we couldn't help but notice how tidy they kept the place, and how many workers routinely walked the grounds with broom and dustpan in hand. Overall, I was impressed with the efforts they make to provide a very comfortable family environment.
  • Before it closes for the season on Sept. 30, take advantage of the discount opportunity at the neighborhood Kroger supermarket. Go to the customer service desk, show them your Kroger Plus card and get $7 off an "all-you-can-ride" pass. Even at full price ($21.95), Family Kingdom offers a solid mix of thrill rides and attractions for the little tykes that will let you get your money's worth. And while it remains to be seen just how much bang for your buck you'll get for the young kids at Hard Rock Park, it's safe to say that Family Kingdom will provide a cost-effective alternative to the much-anticipated new kid on the block.
