Food and Fun Spice Up Little River Waterfront

Food and Fun Spice Up Little River Waterfront

By Becky Billingsley

The waterfront area in downtown Little River may not be large - it is about one block in length - but two restaurants with dissimilar atmospheres and menus both provide excellent experiences.

Fibber’s on the Water

This restaurant has a casually handsome decor with lots of wood that gives it an Irish Pub feeling. With an expansive view of the Intracoastal Waterway, diners might think they are in a Dublin pub looking at the Irish Sea. There's plenty of room inside and outside on a spacious waterfront deck. An outdoor side area is perfect for large groups and catered events.

Fresh local fish is the best dish in the house; it comes right off the boats that dock outside the restaurant's door. The rest of the menu is a happy amalgamation of Irish dishes, American favorites and South Carolina coastal specialties.

Fibber's She-Crab Soup (a regional dish) is a lovely creamy version loaded with crab and laced with sherry. That soup recently earned the first place people's choice award at a local culinary competition called A Taste of the South. More appetizers include Diver Pan-Seared Scallops, Oysters on the Half Shell, Crab-Stuffed Mushrooms, Grouper Bites and Old School Potato Skins stuffed with apple wood smoked bacon and Cheddar cheese.

Entrees include a Blarney Salmon BLT, Guinness Barbecued Chicken Sandwich, Big Joe's Corned Beef Reuben, Little River Soft Shell Crab Sandwich, Galway Bay Fish and Shrimp and Jameson Barbecued Ribs. There are Shepherd's Pie filled with ground beef, onions, celery, carrots and peas in tarragon brown gravy topped with mashed potatoes; and Lowcountry Style Pork Chop topped with onions, peppers, garlic and rosemary.

Light diners have specials choices such as the Seafood Salad Platter with a scoop of shrimp salad and a scoop of crab salad served with a couple of Romaine lettuce leaves, grape tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and crackers. Other salads include Caesar, Wedge and Old School Spinach Salad with mushrooms, bacon, hard-cooked egg and sherry-vinegar dressing.

The juicy Fibber McGee's Classic Burger is hand-patted and comes with unique scoop-shape fries perfect for dipping, and the Coastal Carolina Grouper Sandwich is served with slaw. They go well with a Guinness, which is on draft.

Desserts include Deep Dish Apple Pie a la mode, New York Style Vanilla Beach Cheesecake, Triple Chocolate Cake, Key Lime Pie and another cheesecake called Bailey's Bash that involves Irish cream and loads of chocolate.

Fibber’s (www.FibbersontheWater.com) is open starting at 11 a.m. daily, and the number is 843-280-2271. It's at 4498 Water Front Ave. in Little River, at the end of Mineola Street.

Patio's Tiki Bar & Grill

A new addition in 2011 to the Little River waterfront is Patio's Tiki Bar & Grill (http://www.patiostikibar.com/), an open-air restaurant and bar on a series of sprawling decks overlooking the dock where gamblers board the Sun Cruz Casino Boat.

Patio's is a secluded and beautiful little world where the food served is much better than typical bar food, because one of its owners also has Little River Deli. Much of the menu offered at Patio's is based on dishes served at the deli.

The section for appetizers is called The Tease and includes dishes such as beef chili and cheese fries, fried green beans with wasabi Ranch dressing, and enormous two-bite prawns served cold with cocktail sauce.

From The Garden is the menu's salad patch with choices that can be topped with chicken, salmon or steak plus the Italian Stallion Antipasta Salad.

There are many sandwich and burger choices, from tuna salad and egg salad to grilled ham and cheese, Philly cheesesteak and grilled pimento cheese with bacon, tomato and jalapenos. Don't want bread? Then you can have a wrap.

Personal-size 10-inch pizzas come in flavors like White with oil, garlic, tomatoes and ricotta; and the Smokin' Pizza with chicken, bacon, chipotle, onion and Cheddar.

The dessert section, called "The Happy Ending," has three choices called The Brunette (brownie), The Blondie (blonde brownie) and The Redhead (cherry turnover).

Patio's Tiki Bar & Grill is at 4495 Mineola Ave. in Little River, behind the Sun Cruz building, and the number is 843-427-7228. Hours are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily for food service, and the bar stays open until 9 p.m. Happy Hour is 4-7 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. During Happy Hour on Mondays, free appetizers are served.
