Gas Prices Keeping Long Islanders from Myrtle Beach? Fuhgeddaboudit!

Check this out. Long Islanders are still paying about $4.20 a gallon for gas, yet Newsday tells us they’re still hitting the road this summer in larger numbers. And guess where they’re most likely to go?

  1. Washington, D.C. – 270 miles
  2. Myrtle Beach, S.C. – 725 miles
  3. Ocean City, Md. – 275 miles
  4. Lake George, N.Y. – 230 miles
  5. Lancaster, Penn. – 196 miles
  6. Niagara Falls, N.Y. – 444 miles
  7. Boston, Mass. – 228 miles
  8. Toronto, Ontario, Canada – 500 miles
  9. Orlando, Fla. – 1,125 miles
  10. Virginia Beach, Va. – 400 miles

”When it comes to New York area drivers,” said AAA New York spokesman Robert Sinclair Jr., “road trips are sacrosanct.”

I found it fascinating that two rival destinations – Orlando and Virginia Beach – ranked that far behind the Grand Strand, particularly with Virginia Beach being only half the distance for Long Island drivers. And this list wouldn’t be quite so compelling if the prospective travel pool in question (Long Island’s population: 7.5 million) didn’t exceed the population of 38 states in the U.S.

Somewhere, Brad Dean and city officials are smiling
