http://www.stjohn-mb.org/festival/festival_logo_sm.gif My mouth waters just thinking about it. The dish is called Moussaka (pronounced moo-SOCK-uh), and the standard (3-layer) Greek recipe has a bottom layer of eggplant slices sautéed in olive oil; a middle layer of ground lamb precooked with onion, garlic, chopped tomatoes, herbs (bay leaf, oregano, thyme), and spices (cinnamon, allspice and black pepper); and a top layer of cheese-flavored béchamel sauce, or egg custard. The three layers are laid in a lightly buttered or oiled pan and baked until the top béchamel layer turns golden brown.
It looks absolutely nasty. But the taste? O-PA’!!
Moussaka is one of several mouth-watering Greek foods you’ll find at the 17th Annual Greek Festival being held at St. John’s Greek Orthodox Church of Myrtle Beach September 25th - 28th. This four-day event will be held in the fellowship hall and on the Church grounds at the corner of Hwy. 17 Bypass and 33rd Avenue North, on Thursday from 11 a.m. – 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. – 10 p.m., and on Sunday from noon until 7 p.m. Admission is only $1 for adults, and children 10 and under are free.
Along with moussaka, visitors will enjoy such Greek delicacies as gyros, roasted lamb, Greek salad and Spanakopita – as well as a wide assortment of Greek pastries and breads. Soft drinks, beer and Greek wines will also be available. You can also get a Baklava ice cream sundae. You can dine in, or get it to go.
There will be a coffee shop, gift shop and vendor booths, along with live Greek music, Greek dancers, children’s activities, Church tours and more. This year, a portion of the festival’s raffle sale proceeds will benefit the Waccamaw Youth Center and C.A.S.A. (Citizens Against Spouse Abuse).
There will be free additional parking and continuous shuttle bus service from the back parking lot of Captain George’s (29th Avenue N. @ Hwy. 17 Bypass) from 12 – 9:30 p.m. each day of the festival. For more information, contact the church at (843) 448-3773.
