South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford allowed a midnight Wednesday deadline to pass without acting on the tourism fee legislation we reported on late last week. As such, the bill now becomes law, and gives municipalities within Horry County the option of enacting a tourism fee of up to one percent of gross retail sales, for the purpose of tourism promotion.
Brant Branham, board chairman for the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, offers the following comments in a statement released Thursday:
"We are encouraged that the tourism development fee legislation is now law in South Carolina. This new law gives local municipalities and towns within Horry County a new tool to create jobs, reduce property taxes and help spur our local economy. We are very thankful to the Horry County legislative delegation for their efforts to craft this legislation, which is truly a win-win for residents and businesses. We hope local city or town councils will take the opportunity to study this new law and give it their full consideration."
What do you think, Beach Bloggers? Will this bill help our local economy, or is it one potential tax too many for your liking?
