Several weeks ago in this space, we discussed the merits of expanding wireless Internet access throughout the Grand Strand. Local municipalities now appear poised to step up these efforts as HTC-sponsored pilot programs in Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach have now taken root, and Surfside Beach is exploring the possibility of charging tourists for accessing a new Wi-Fi service.
The initiative would only enhance the Myrtle Beach area's current standing as one of the nation's top 10 Wi-Fi beaches. Though today's Sun News article points out the anticipated annual profits that areas like Surfside Beach could realize, it doesn't cite a proposed usage fee. That said, how much would you be willing to spend to access a broad-based, municipal Wi-Fi service?
Depends. If they get greedy with it, no way. But if they make it reasonable, say $20 for a week while I’m there, I’d definitely do it.
There’s nothing more annoying than having to scour an area for a hotspot, and then find out that everyone’s capacity varies by price, quality of signal or overall accessability. If a universally provided system works well, I’ll be one of the first ones to sign up to use it.
I’m on the road with my laptop constantly, and if I knew I could get on the internet from a broad range in MB then I’d do even more business there.
