Not two seconds after I scraped the last bit of dinner off my dish, Josh Quigley of Quigley’s Pint and Plate in Pawleys Island approached our table to see how we enjoyed our meal.
I nodded my approval, and just as Josh then began to check on another patron, I couldn’t resist.
”Been waiting a long time to find a place that makes shepherd’s pie the right way,” I blurted out.
Josh gave me a quizzical look, as if he’d mistaken my nod for a head shake.
”No, really,” I explained. “You guys know how to do this right. The lamb was superb.”
Newly reassured, Josh thanked me for the compliment, and seemed grateful that I was one less customer with whom he had to ever-so-tactfully set the record straight as it concerns one of Quigley’s signature dishes. “You’d be amazed at how many people tell us they like it, but that we make it the wrong way,” he said. “They’re too used to having it made with ground beef.”
In fact, Quigley’s shepherd’s pie is a rich lamb stew with carrots, peas and onions, topped with mashed potatoes and finished in the oven to give the potatoes a tinge of brown crisp. Sounds like a dish the kids would avoid like a spelling test, but for the grownups? I hadn’t had a shepherd’s pie that good since 2000, when Tir Na Nog in midtown Manhattan gave me my first real taste of what the dish is supposed to be.
So where does the shepherd’s pie measure on Quigley’s culinary adventure meter? Somewhere in the middle, I guess. Traditional pub fare can be had, as can an eclectic selection that includes fried pickles, shrimp & grits and a Mingo Salad accented by grilled pear and crumbled gorgonzola.
Six types of home-brewed beer were flowing from Quigley’s tap this early October evening, one perfect for taking a pint or two to lounge on the lakeside deck as the dusk settled in. It all made for a very relaxed atmosphere, and little wonder as to why so many locals and regular visitors count this place among their regular hangouts.
Quigley’s is located at 257 Willbrook Boulevard, just off Highway 17 across from Litchfield Beach & Golf Resort. For more information, call them at 843-237-7010.
And remember – as Josh reminded me:
”Shepherds don’t wander the field following cows.”
