Help Kids in Need at Pawleys Island Youth Cup

One of the most satisfying feelings in life comes from helping a child.

That's what the Pawleys Island Youth Cup is all about. Established in 1996 as an annual Lowcountry event, The Pawleys Island Youth Cup Golf Tournament brings the community together for an event that benefits its less fortunate children. And through Teach My People's Summer Youth Camp, these kids find structure and support through after-school and summer programs.

This year's 11th Anniversary benefit event will be held Saturday, June 2, and features golf at one of Golf for Women's "50 Best Courses" in the country for 2005, Willbrook Plantation, with an awards barbecue immediately following. The particulars:

Location: Willbrook Plantation Golf Course

Designed to help children in grades 1-5, ages 6-11, Teach My People serves those living at or below poverty level in the Waccamaw School District of Pawleys Island. It helps kids by providing a Christian foundation for developing spiritual growth, moral character and personal discipline.

Kim Granchelli, program assistant with Teach My People, said that the tournament currently has 20 teams registered; last year's event had 24 full teams, and its ultimate 2007 goal is 32 teams.

"Besides foursomes, we still have plenty of sponsorship opportunities available," said Granchelli. "We're extremely grateful for the 30 sponsorships we already have in, but we still have room to get to 45 or 50." Available sponsorship opportunities include golf cart ($100), individual hole ($200), iron ($500) and driver ($1,000), and all sponsors will be recognized via sign and program placements.

Teach My People's Summer Camp serves about 50 kids each year in an eight-week program, and is hosted at the Teach My People Center at 753 Waverly Road in Pawleys Island. Activities include academic enrichment in reading and math, to help campers retain and enhance the knowledge they received during the preceding school year; swimming lessons; arts & crafts; music; and field trips. The camp's goal is to work with the same enrollees each year, to effectively gauge their progress and provide a comprehensive continuum for individual development.

Outside of select grant opportunities for which the organization may occasionally apply, Teach My People does not receive local, state or federal government subsidies and essentially relies on contributions from individuals, companies and other local church/community organizations. "That's why funding through events like the Pawleys Island Youth Cup is so critical," said Granchelli.
