Kind of a Big Deal in Myrtle Beach This Weekend …

Kind of a Big Deal in Myrtle Beach This Weekend …

In the never-ending struggle to beat child obesity like the dead horse it should be, the Children’s Museum of South Carolina is sponsoring a series of events from April 30th through May 2nd in the inaugural Family Fitness Festival and Fun Run. Events will take place at The Market Common, and include activities for parents and children alike. Think of this as an overgrown field day, complete with “tot trots” and “stroller struts” to encourage kids and new parents to stay active. An all-inclusive wristband for activities, as well as access to special discounts offered by area vendors, is available for $5 (price is the same for adults and children). Family Kingdom, the Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Magiquest, the Palace Theatre, and many others will be partnering with Festival Promotions to bring you these discounts, which are valid for the duration of the festival. Visit mbfamilyfitnessfest.com to get details on how to register for events, and a full list of participating vendors.

The Rivertown Music and Arts Festival takes place this Saturday in historic downtown Conway, featuring local artisans and musicians. Bands will play from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Laurel Street, and visitors may bring their own chairs to sit and listen to everything from jazz to steel drums. Food vendors will offer gourmet treats or simple, honest hot dogs, as your tastes require. This event is free to the public. Call 843-248-6260 for details.

Barefoot Landing will also host the North Myrtle Beach Humane Society’s Pounding the Pavement Pet Photo Contest and Pooch Pageant on Saturday. Events begin at 10 a.m. and include voting for the photo contest. Votes are $1 each, and registration in the pageant is $10. All proceeds go towards the Human Society’s continuing efforts to support and care for the homeless pet population. North Myrtle Beach Animal Hospital is also offering a rabies clinic from 12 to 2 p.m., so anyone who is short on cash but still wants to provide their pet with the minimum vaccine requirement can get Woofers up to date. See the www.barefootlanding.com events calendar for more information.

Finally, local band Sharklegs will be going up against some stiff competition in the Battle of the Bands at Hard Rock Cafe in Celebrity Square this Sunday. The competition starts at 8 p.m. and is free to all ages. Come out and support local talent. This event qualifies a lucky hopeful to move higher up in a competition that puts them performing in London with Paul McCartney and other greats. So, ummm, it’s kind of a big deal.
