May’s “Sounds of the Strand”

The headliners among May's "Sounds of the Strand" are poised to offer their own slice of Americana during the 2007 Cruisin' the Coast Myrtle Beach Spring Bike Week:

  • The Surf City All-Star Band, featuring original members of The Beach Boys, Saturday, May 12, Main Street, North Myrtle Beach - What better way to hang out with a few hundred thousand of your closest friends than kicking off the week's activities to the sounds of The Beach Boys? The Second Annual Mayfest on Main in North Myrtle Beach features a free concert headlined by "the World's Greatest Surf Music Band," and will include appearances by Al Jardine and David Marks, each of whom is an original member of The Beach Boys. Mayfest on Main festivities run all day, beginning at 9 a.m.; at this point, we're not sure what time the band is scheduled to perform. Check back to the North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce's event Web page for updates as the event draws closer.
  • The Charlie Daniels Band with The Marshall Tucker Band and The Outlaws, Thursday, May 17, 8 p.m., House of Blues (Country/Roots Rock) - Pride in America was awfully tough to come by in 1979, when as a kid my lasting memories of that year were the Iran hostage crisis, long lines from the ensuing gas shortage and the height of the Cold War. But then, two groups came along to give us all something to shout about: the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team, whose "Miracle on Ice" struck a mighty blow to the Soviet Union and its "Evil Empire"; and The Charlie Daniels Band, whose 1980 patriotic anthem "In America" made us all feel good about telling the Ayatollah Khomeini where to stick it. Today, in the wake of 9/11 and the midst of the Iraq war, "In America" and Daniel's rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" continue to inspire his countrymen in difficult times.

Daniels (pictured, right) headlines the "Volunteer Jam" along with The Outlaws and The Marshall Tucker Band, whose classic hits include "Heard It In A Love Song" and "Can't You See," both of which (and more) can be heard on the group's MySpace page.

  • Travis Tritt, Friday, May 18, 8 p.m., House of Blues (Country) - A household name in country music for nearly two decades, Travis Tritt has produced dozens of hits on the country charts, with several of them (including "Best of Intentions" (2000)) finding their way onto the Billboard Hot 100.

Four-time CMA Vocal Group of the Year Diamond Rio headlines the "Sounds of the Strand" for June. Check back here next month for more information on that performance, and others.

As always, let us know what you like about this month's performers, and enjoy the shows!

I remember that time well too.  Every time I heard that Charlie Daniels song, I wanted to kick some Ayatola tail too!

Beach Boys shows are awesome.  It will be a real treat to be able to see this for free!
