This week’s question:
What was the greatest golf shot of all time?
Plenty to choose from here. In posing the question, I know that most people would opt for ones from the peak of the television era, though Ben Hogan’s 1-iron from the 18th at Merion in 1950 ranked pretty highly in ESPN SportsNation’s results from their 2006 poll.
The following are my top five selections, in ascending order:
#5 – Corey Pavin’s magical 5-wood on the 18th at Shinnecock, propelling him to victory at the 1995 U.S. Open. There are clutch golf shots, and there was this one -- a 235-yard shot into the wind, uphill, from a man best known for his pea-shooting driving ability. Many a clutch moment in Ryder Cup play, too.
#4 – Constantino Rocca makes a 90-foot putt from off the green to force a playoff at the 1995 British Open.
(Fast forward to 1:10 remaining in the clip, and check out the before-and-after reactions of eventual winner John Daly. Classic.)
#3 - Larry Mize pitches in from off the green to win the 1987 Masters.
#2 – Bob Tway holes a bunker shot on the final hole to win the 1986 PGA Championship. For a man with an otherwise lengthy but undistinguished PGA Tour career, this one shot brought it plenty of luster.
#1 – Tom Watson’s birdie chip on the 17th hole at the 1982 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach.
Time to weigh in, Grand Strand golfers. Which shot is your choice?
