Get the wet naps ready. Labor Day Weekend's coming - and in Myrtle Beach, it's all about the barbecue!
The Second Annual Beach, Boogie & BBQ Festival, Aug. 31-Sept. 1 at Valor Park on the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, once more hosts the official barbecue competition of South Carolina with more than $20,000 in prize money up for grabs. Cooks from across the land will compete in such categories as "Anything but Pork," "Best Sauce" and "Best Dessert," and when the judging's done you'll get the chance to buy and chow down on the entries - with all proceeds benefiting the Omar Shrine Temple.
And in the "Pass the Pepto" category, the International Federation of Competitive Eating sends some of the world's best to the Grand Strand that weekend in their perpetual quest for gastrointestinal glory. The combatants square off in the IFOCE's World BBQ Eating Championship, competing for $4,000 in prize money - and in pursuit of the world record of 23 pulled pork BBQ sandwiches eaten in 10 minutes.
The record holder? None other than "The Black Widow," Sonya Thomas - 105 pounds of chow-hounding fury, and the world's undisputed asparagus/cheesecake/chicken nugget/chicken wing/crabcake/egg/fruitcake/hamburger/jambalaya/lobster/oyster/pizza/pulled pork/taco/tater tot/turducken-eating champ. Practice up, kids, and you too can be an IFOCE superstar - maybe even appear in your very own MasterCard commercial:
There's also a cool car show, live entertainment, boat rides and a kids zone to keep you and the family busy.
