Myrtle Beach Remains the Family Choice

Mitch Albom wonders where everyone is this month. Based on the crowds here this summer, he may want to make Myrtle Beach the first place he looks.

True to form, millions keep escaping the daily grind for the friendly expanses of the Grand Strand, and seemingly in record numbers. A recent national traveler survey confirmed it by placing Myrtle Beach as the second most popular family summer destination in the U.S., trailing only the land of Mickey.

We can ask "why" 'till we're blue in the face, and we'll get many of the common answers - the beach, the entertainment, the restaurants, etc. But visuals set to theme music are always a helpful reinforcement, as in this YouTube video (So what if it's got some '06 Pavilion footage in it? It still gets to much of what makes Myrtle Beach special.):

If this his how the families play, where do they stay? Hundreds of lodging options, to be sure. Right now, these are the families' top picks along the Grand Strand:

  • South - Litchfield Beach & Golf Resort (14276 Ocean Hwy., Pawleys Island). The destination of choice for visitors of Pawleys Island, Murrells Inlet and the Waccamaw Golf Trail, Litchfield also earns big points with families - as noted by Golf for Women, which recently included it among its "25 Best Family Golf Resorts" in the nation.
  • Central - Dunes Village Resort (5200 N. Ocean Blvd., Myrtle Beach). The Myrtle Beach choice of family travelers at TripAdvisor, Dunes Village boasts the area's only indoor waterpark.
  • North - Avista Resort (300 N. Ocean Blvd., North Myrtle Beach). The top-ranked hotel in North Myrtle Beach by both families and singles on TripAdvisor, Avista's popularity is boosted by its contemporary design, abundant pool features and central location to area attractions.
