Myrtlewood’s two popular golf courses: which should you play?

Myrtlewood sees more rounds on it's two championship golf courses than almost any other club in Myrtle Beach. There are many theories as to why. One member I played with told me: "It's because whenever people book a condo they're given a free round for two here." Not necessarily the case, according to management. They point out location, it's moderate difficulty and mid-level price point. Greens fees peak at $74 on both courses. "We're playing here today because we were given two free rounds at the condo we're staying at for the week," said John from West Virginia, one of my playing partners this afternoon. Whatever the case, Myrtlewood has a solid membership and receives a lot of repeat play. Both courses are a bit different though. The PineHills course is short at just 6,600 yards from the back tees, but it's redesign by Arthur Hills in the 90s added a lot of difficulty and contouring around the greens. The Palmetto course is longer but wide open. It also has the best hole on the property: the par-4 18th that plays along the Intracoastal Waterway. The PineHills has more memorable holes and sights though, despite being on less acreage. The way the land was shaped makes it look like a grander course. Personally, I would play the PineHills over the Palmetto, but move to the back tees instead of the shorter 6,100-yard whites. There is more hole variety and the course was very nicely shaped by Hills. Both courses at Myrtlewood are women and senior-friendly.

Passing by that course every day on the bypass its hard not to make the turn in there and play a few holes.  It all looks like its kept in immaculate shape.
