Ninth Annual Gullah-Geechee Rice Celebration Set for April 22-24

The Ninth Annual Gullah-Geechee Rice Celebration takes place Friday, April 22 through Easter Sunday, April 24. The event is a chance to celebrate the historical contributions of the African-American/Gullah-Geechee people to Georgetown County, South Carolina, and the historical significance of those contributions.

There will be Gullah educational events such as cultural lectures; artisans such as sweet grass basket sewer, Vera Manigault; local hammock makers; boat maker, Willie De Reef, and quilt maker, Bunny Rodrigues with her Michelle Obama Family History Quilt and a CAAHO Quilt show; and folk artists.

Merchants and Gullah food vendors will also be on hand. Other events include a Gullah Chit Chat & Entertainment at the Gullah Museum & Gullah O’oman Shop at the corner of Waverly Road and Petigru Drive on Friday, April 22; the Rice Celebration/Festival at Parkersville Park on Saturday April 23; and the Easter Sunday Gullah worship service at the St. John A M E Church on Sunday, April 24th.

This event is sponsored by the Gullah-Geechee Rice Celebration Committee, the Gullah Historical and Cultural Society of Georgetown County, local churches and the community, local business organizations, the Georgetown County Recreation and Leisure Services Department, and the Committee for African-American History Observance.
