It’s intriguing how, in the modern gaming era of Madden ’09, Nintendo Wii and countless other high-tech video games, the simplicity of a classic beachside arcade can still have massive appeal.
On a rainy day yesterday in Myrtle Beach, the Fun Plaza on the Ocean Boulevard boardwalk got a workout. And all the buzz was centered around the tried-and-true, decades-old amusements like skee ball, and rows of 1957 William Deluxe baseball pinball machines.

It’s the William Deluxe games that drew particular attention from Forbes.com, which lists Myrtle Beach as a destination boasting one of America’s “10 Best Arcade Boardwalks.” And it all made for the perfect excuse to take the kids over there with their visiting cousin from Long Island, and give them a break from the squabbling over “who’s next” to play Guitar Hero on the Xbox.
How’d they adapt? An hour and a few fistfuls of quarters later, the only way I could drag them out of there was with the promise of a mega-burger and world-class fries next door at Peaches Corner.
The Fun Plaza is located on Ocean Boulevard, just off the northeast corner of the former Pavilion Amusement Park site. Check it out!
