As NASCAR prepares to gather in Charlotte Wednesday to unveil its inaugural Hall of Fame class, I came across a treasure trove of video footage that celebrates South Carolina's own rich history in stock car racing.
The SCnowRacing channel on YouTube features scores of videos that highlight the racing action at Darlington Raceway, including footage of past Southern 500 races that date back as far as a half century.
In many of these, you'll see a very familiar face to Grand Strand television - Cecil Chandler, WBTW-TV's longtime newsman, whose been a part of the Southern 500 action for more than four decades. In this clip, Chandler reminisces on some of those memories, including his up-close view of the wild 1965 crash by NASCAR great Cale Yarborough:
To someone who's still relatively new to the Grand Strand, and whose exposure to Chandler's work had been limited to random feature segments on WBTW's evening newscasts, this footage gave me a whole new appreciation for the role he's played in NASCAR's phenomenal growth. And if a casual racing fan like me can appreciate this, I'd think that the legions of hardcore racing enthusiasts in this area will really enjoy it. If you haven't already visited, it's definitely worth a look!
