The Myrtle Beach Pelicans' right field phenom took a Wilmington Blue Rocks pitch and hit a laser beam, well clear of the 400-foot marker in center field. No word on its final resting place, but from my vantage point tonight behind home plate, the ball had the trajectory of a Tiger Woods 2-iron headed straight for the Atlantic.
My friend Frank nudges me, points to Heyward as he rounds the bases, and says, "That's the guy all the scouts are talking about."
That includes Keith Law, senior baseball analyst for Scouts Inc. and a writer for ESPN.com, who back in January listed Heyward as the third-best prospect in all of minor league baseball. He's an imposing presence already (6-4, 220 lbs.), yet physically and competitively Heyward is still growing. His home run tonight was just the latest testament to that.
At the rate he's progressing, Heyward will move through the Braves' farm system quickly. Our advice? Catch him in action at BB&T Coastal Field, while you still can.
