About this time last year, we suggested you catch a star 19-year-old Myrtle Beach Pelican in action at BB&T Coastal Field while you still could, since he appeared to be on the fast track to the Major Leagues. Now, you can still see Jason Heyward play in person – so long as you make the six-hour drive to Turner Field in Atlanta.
This year, we’ll make the same suggestion about the latest 19-year-old phenom who’s made his way to the Grand Strand: pitcher Julio Teheran.
The tall, wispy right-hander has allowed barely more than two earned runs per nine innings in 14 starts this season, beginning in Class A Rome and moving quickly up to Myrtle Beach in May. His stint with the Pelicans has shown Teheran to be a strikeout machine (52 in 44 1/3 innings pitched), with a blazing fastball that hit 98 mph on the radar gun during his appearance in the recent California League-Carolina League All-Star Game at BB&T.
Just how good is Teheran? The native of Cartagena, Colombia has now been chosen to represent the World team in the All-Star Futures Game during Major League Baseball's All-Star break from Angels Stadium in Anaheim, California.
The game will take place on the final day of the Major League season's first half on Sunday, July 11, with first pitch coming at 6 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
In addition to the praise being heaped onto this 19-year old fireballer, Keith Law of ESPN.com published his mid-season Top 25 Prospect rankings and Teheran finds himself at Number 11, a 52-spot jump from Law's pre-season ranking. Teheran's rotation-mate Arodys Vizcaino finds himself at Number 19.
With an entire second half to be played here on the Grand Strand, Pelicans fans can witness Teheran's growth and development into one of the top pitchers in all of Minor League Baseball first-hand.
