Philly Foursome Celebrates Myrtle Beach “Week of Dreams,” 40th Anniversary-Style

The Energizer bunny's got nothing on these guys. Heck, they've just kept on coming since long before that pink, drum-beating rodent became a glint in the minds of some Chicago ad execs.

They're a group of guys from suburban Philadelphia, who just this past week celebrated their 40th year of golf vacationing in the Myrtle Beach area. Ron Bingeman, Larry Spangler and Everett Cassel commemorated the occasion like they've done every year, with nine days of golf on several of the area's premier courses. They were joined by a fourth, Craig Aiken, who's been with the group for the past 20 years in place of an original group member (whose health concerns kept him from continuing his own part in the pilgrimage after the first 20 years).

On this day at King's North, this foursome was chock full of stories, jokes and good-natured ribbing. They also reminisced about the initial years they started coming here to golf - "back when there were only about 10 courses here," remembered Bingeman, "and the tab for golf, lodging and food was 25 bucks a day."

Times may have changed a bit since then, but not this group's zeal for Grand Strand golf. Bingeman estimated that his crew has played well over 9,000 holes here since 1970, and loved every stroke involved. Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday helped them celebrate this year's special occasion in style, picking up the tab for the group's golf, lodging, airfare and rental car, while also treating them to dinner at Rioz Brazilian Steakhouse.

But for all the rounds, experiences and memories they've accrued along the way, why was Bingeman wearing, of all things, a hat bearing the logo of a household lubricant?

"That's easy," said Bingeman, pointing at each letter and number in sequence as he explained the new meaning of "WD-40":

"Week of Dreams - 40 Years Running."
