"Of all the athletes and people I've coached with and been involved with, he was the ultimate warrior ... You'd want him as a player, you'd want him as your captain, you'd want him as your coach. That's the best you can say about a man, I think."
Those were the words of George Steinbrenner, as he spoke with NFL Films about Lou Saban - the man he's considered both a friend and mentor for more than a half century. And such fond remembrances have been pouring in from across the country since Saban's passing last weekend at the age of 87 at his home in North Myrtle Beach.
I vaguely remember Saban from my youth, as my beloved (and hapless) New York Jets got randomly pulverized by Saban's O.J. Simpson-led Buffalo Bills. But the more enduring memories come not from those games, but from several NFL Films segments that featured Saban over the years. And thanks to the efforts of Steve Sabol and his crew, those memories will live on for generations to come:
