It took some time for Myrtle Beach to get it cranked up in Friday night's homecoming game against St. James at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium, but better late than never.
After sleep-walking to a 14-0 halftime lead over the Sharks, the Seahawks got a little motivational speech from head coach Mickey Wilson and emerged from the locker room to explode to a 56-7 victory.
``Ever since the Lake City game (which Myrtle Beach won 35-21 two weeks ago) everyone has been talking like we won the region and that's not the case,'' Wilson said. ``We've got to come out ready to play 48 minutes of football no matter who we're playing.''
Quarterback Everett Golson threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to Donte Sumpter on the Seahawks' second play of the game but was shut down by the Sharks until the intermission. Running back Morgan Byrd's 62-yard touchdown run was the only other offense Myrtle Beach could muster before the break as St. James sacked Golson twice and made him hurry several passes.
``They were bringing the house (on the pass rush) and we didn't do a very good job of picking it up,'' Wilson said. ``We made some adjustments at halftime and finally started playing our kind of ball.''
Golson responded by throwing four TD passes in the third period alone, the first on a 59-yarder to Jerrod Jackson on the Seahawks' second play of the third quarter. He threw back-to-back TDs to Steven Cobb, then Sumpter made a diving catch in the end zone to pull in a 38-yard score, allowing Golson to call it a night. He completed 7 of 8 passes for four touchdowns and 200 yards in the third quarter alone.
Backup quarterback Mitch Campbell got into the act in the fourth quarter by throwing a pair of TD passes to Tremon Wilson. The Sharks got on the board in the final minute of play on Carl Buddin's 28-yard scoring pass to Taylor Sellers.
Golson finished with 253 passing yards and five touchdowns on 10-for-16 passing. Byrd finished the game with 129 yards rushing on 10 carries and had a 77-yard score called back on a penalty. Sumpter topped the century mark in receiving yards with 103 and two TDs.
Myrtle Beach improved to 7-1 overall and 3-0 in Region VII-AAA play while St. James fell to 2-6 on the season. The Seahawks play host to Georgetown next week with a chance to clinch the region title before closing out the regular season at North Myrtle Beach.
