Sockin’ It to ‘Em, WSJ-Style

http://www.mbsun.com/assets_c/2009/04/Stirrups-thumb-316x248.jpgWhen you think front page of the Wall Street Journal, you naturally think ... socks, right?

OK, maybe not. But if you saw it on Tuesday, you'd have had no choice - because there it was, staring you right in the face: a feature-length piece highlighting the Myrtle Beach Pelicans and their choice of uniform hosiery.

The socks in question are actually stirrups, and they're part of the team's effort to pay homage to a baseball tradition. The article goes on to detail the history of stirrups, from their originally intended use at the onset of the 20th Century to how baseball fashion has largely bypassed them in favor of solid-colored knee-highs or ankle-length pants.

As Pelicans Managing Partner Chuck Greenberg explained in the team's release, ""The addition of stirrups was an essential finishing touch when we were redesigning the look and feel of the franchise, and we are delighted the Wall Street Journal chose to focus on our homage to baseball tradition and shine national attention on the Pelicans."
