Spirit’s Columbia Pullout Has No Apparent Effect on Myrtle Beach Service

McClatchy Newspapers’ Noelle Phillips reported today that Spirit Airlines’ decision to discontinue service out of South Carolina’s capital city doesn’t appear to have any bearing on its Myrtle Beach service status. Included in Phillips’ report:

Bill Golden, the president of Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday marketing group, said the service cut in Columbia did not set off an alarm bell that service cuts would be made in Myrtle Beach. But he said it was a good reminder of the importance of getting airlines marketing support from the local business community.

"It's pure and simple economics," he said. "If the market's working, if a particular route is working, they're going to continue it. As soon as it stops working, they're going to abandon it."

In contrast, Spirit has been aggressive with its Grand Strand marketing efforts in recent months, announcing new nonstop service between Myrtle Beach and Chicago beginning next month, and super-saver promotions that, based on Spirit’s eccentric track record, figure to only increase in this market in the coming months.
