Tasty Desserts in Myrtle Beach? Priceless.

By Christina Knauss

Paige Price has lived in Myrtle Beach since she was two, and she's proud to be producing one-of-a-kind desserts in her hometown.

Since 1988, Price has run Priceless Desserts, which has become a Grand Strand staple for those seeking custom cakes and desserts that can't be found anywhere else.

"I was looking for a job and I had always baked, so one of my brothers suggested that since I was so good at it, I should give that a try," she said.

For the first eight years, Price worked wholesale, selling cakes to restaurants around the Myrtle Beach area. In 1996, she shifted the business to one-on-one work with customers.

"Other people were getting more compliments on my cakes, and I wanted more recognition and more of a personal relationship with the person that was buying my cake," she said.

Priceless Desserts was originally located on Forestbrook Road, and moved to its current location on North Kings Highway in Myrtle Beach in 2000.

All the desserts Price serves come from her original recipes.

One of her greatest skills is being able to produce a cake that fits exactly what a customer is dreaming about for a special occasion. Ornate, multi-layered wedding cakes are one of Priceless' main specialties.

"We'll design the cake however somebody wants us to do it," Price said. "If you bring us a picture or tell us you want something with certain colors, we'll come up with an idea of how to do it."

Price said one of her biggest challenges was an Eiffel Tower cake she created for a birthday party - it took about two weeks to design and plan.

Recently, Priceless Desserts has created everything from wildlife-patterned cakes for a little girl's birthday to another cake shaped to look like a Louis Vuitton bag.

By far the most popular pattern for wedding cakes is a seashell theme, including incredibly delicate shells created from icing and sugar.

"We do lots and lots of seashells because of our location," Price said.

Priceless' main specialties are southern desserts, including cheesecakes, pound cakes, carrot and red velvet cakes.

The shop also offers specialty and gourmet kitchen items, including cheese spreads, teas, glasses and a popular assortment of candles designed to resemble real cake.

"They look like pound cakes and people mistake them all the time," Price said. The cake-scented candles offer a good dose of sweetness to any home.

Priceless Desserts also offers an assortment of custom gift baskets, which can include everything from teas and jellies to nuts, relishes, olives, cookies and Priceless Desserts home-baked items.

Customers are welcome to stop by and discuss an order with Price and other workers. For more intricate and detailed plans such as weddings, appointments are recommended.

"A lot of orders go to the military - we've shipped cakes to Iraq." Price said.

Priceless Desserts' baking and decorating is done by a small, highly-trained staff. The business is also a family affair. Price refers to her mother as "my go-to girl" because she shows up to help where she's needed, and her two brothers also stop in to help when they're in the area.

Clientele at Priceless Desserts includes many devoted locals as well as tourists, and Price said she's proud that her Myrtle Beach-based business has become known far beyond the borders of the city.

"I think it's important that somebody grew up here, started a business here and is making a living here," she said.
