Throwing Out Options for Summer Play

We live in a country that likes to throw things.

Parties.

Tantrums.

Rocks.

Sometimes, we just like to throw stuff really, really hard. Or really, really far. Great tension reliever, or a leisurely way to pass the time on a lazy summer day.

Leave it to us here at the Beach Blog to show you some fun ways to, well, throw stuff on your spring or summer vacation (and NOT inflict bodily harm or emotional duress).

Aerobie

As a teenager living on Eastern Long Island, I was introduced to these fluorescent rings as an alternative to tossing a Frisbee on the beach. Twenty-three years later they're still going strong, and entering the Guinness Book of World Records in the process (some dude in California tossed one of these things a quarter mile - 1,333 feet - in 2003. Really.). Pick up an Aerobie Pro ($7.99) at Dick's Sporting Goods, located on the Highway 17 Bypass side of Coastal Grand Mall.

Innova Disc Golf

Even if you can't hit a 4-iron on the traditional links to save your life, don't fret: here's your chance to even the score with your playing partner. Disc golf (as pictured above) has grown in mainstream popularity in recent years, and equipment is more readily available at most sporting goods stores (locally at Dick's). The Coastal Grand Mall location carries a variety of discs - including a 3-disc set ($39.99) with a "distance driver" disc for longer throws; a "mid-range" disc for approach shots; and a "putter" disc for finishing the "hole." Disc golf "pins" - or goals, as they're known in this game - are not carried in-store but are available online ($129.99).

X-zylo Flying Gyroscope

This promotional video shows you a bunch of imaginative ways to use this toy. I bought one yesterday, and had an absolute blast tossing it around the beach with my sons and nephews. If you don't believe you can throw one of these things several hundred feet, try it for yourself. The video, and your own experience, won't lie. Get it for $9.99 at Klig's Kites located at Broadway at the Beach. They used to be at Coastal Grand Mall, but you won't find their gliders at this location anymore (maybe hang-glider collars, though, from the Jos. A. Bank men's clothing shop that's going in there now).

One thing to remember when you use the X-zylo: you really need a wide-open space to use it, like at a park or ball field. You can use it at the beach, but be careful; sun bathers may not appreciate your leaping over them to retrieve errant throws, and the right (or wrong) combination of wind, aim and adrenaline will send this thing far into the Atlantic.

Give this stuff a try, and let us know what you think!

The Kligs at Broadway has all kinds of neat stuff to throw or fly.  It’s worth a visit.

If your old and creaky like me, nothing’s a better boost to your ego than being able to throw something a few hundred feet!

My eight year old daugher threw one of those aerobi discs a couple hundred feet!  They are lots of fun for the kids.
