Tourism Fee Gets First OK from City Council

The Myrtle Beach City Council today unanimously approved the first draft of a sales tax increase intended to raise funds for tourism promotion and property tax credits for city property owners.

The measure follows the state's recent passage of a bill allowing municipalities the option of implementing a 1-percent sales tax increase for this purpose.

"I applaud city council for balancing the needs of businesses with tax cuts for residents. Council members have guaranteed homeowner tax savings and provided important infrastructure investments," said Brant Branham, Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce board chairman, in a statement issued this afternoon.

Added Steve Chapman, MBACC immediate past chairman: "In response to city council's action today, the chamber's marketing council has expanded its advertising campaign to increase summer business by immediately investing additional funds in tourism promotion."

City Council has asked the chamber to develop a Web site to show homeowners the benefits of the tax. Homeowners can log on to mbtaxcalc.com to calculate their property tax savings.
