Weekend Outlook: Artistry in Motion, and on Canvas

Weekend Outlook: Artistry in Motion, and on Canvas

Art is most certainly in the eye of the beholder, and there’s no more eclectic sampling on the Grand Strand than what you’ll find when you’re out and about this weekend.

For starters, film and television star Tommy Davidson (pictured) headlines tonight through Saturday night at Stand Up Carolina Comedy Club (3140D Hwy. 17, Murrells Inlet). Davidson is perhaps best known for starring alongside comedy heavyweights Jim Carrey, Jamie Foxx and Damon Wayans in the hit FOX series “In Living Color” in the 1990s, and has since added numerous film credits (“Booty Call,” Spike Lee’s “Bamboozled,” “Ace Ventura II: When Nature Calls”). Tickets are $20 apiece for 8 p.m. shows each night, along with 10 p.m. shows on Friday and Saturday. Visit Stand Up Carolina’s Web site for more information.

For a tamer experience, the Seacoast Artist Guild Gallery showcases its works daily from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Applewood House of Pancakes (14361 Ocean Hwy., Pawleys Island). The gallery features works by local artists in paintings, photographs and three-dimensional pieces. Scenes from the Lowcountry, rivers, beaches and a variety of art are all available for sale. An artist for the day demonstrates their work on most Saturdays. Visit www.seacoastartistguild.com for more information.

And for something completely different, check out “The Great American Trailer Park Musical,” which runs Tuesdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 3 p.m. at The Palace Theatre in Myrtle Beach. This country-rock and blues Off-Broadway musical hit is a "show about agoraphobia, adultery, '80s nostalgia, spray cheese, road kill, hysterical pregnancy, a broken electric chair, kleptomania, strippers, flan & disco." It celebrates the culture of folding lawn chairs, shopping at the 99 cent store, daytime TV, neighbors who know everything about everybody's business, and all the tragedy and high drama that accompany a microcosm of life amongst the double-wides and strip joints of northern Florida. It’s rated PG-13 for adult language. For tickets or more information, call the Palace Theatre box office at 800-905-4228.
