Ummm ... big weekend in Myrtle Beach. Now that the summer is getting downright official – with most colleges out of session and grade schools not far behind – Myrtle Beach is warming up in more ways than one. The long-anticipated Oceanfront Boardwalk Ribbon Cutting ceremonies will be held this Saturday at 12 p.m. The new boardwalk is an added attraction in Myrtle Beach, hearkening back to the city’s early days as a family-friendly, lazy beach-walking town.
The ceremony, which will take place amidst the inaugural Beach Music Festival, happens downtown between 8th and 9th Avenue North. The Beach Music Festival will include food vendors and live entertainment from some beach music greats like Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs, Ben E. King, The Chairmen of the Board and more. The Cake Boss (Buddy Valastro) from TLC’s eponymous show will also be in town to render a giant confection in the shape of a flip flop. What could be more fitting?
The festivities run from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and are free to the public. Visit the Beach Music Festival Web page to get a full list of events.
Taste!, the gourmet expo and trade show, comes to the Myrtle Beach Convention Center this weekend, Friday through Sunday. Guy Fieri, otherwise known as the dude with the crazy blonde hair in the TGI Friday’s commercials, will be there with other heavyweights from the Food Network and Bravo TV to blim, blam, and boom it up in your mouth and elsewhere. Tickets are available online at www.tasteshows.com and can be purchased for individual demos, seminars, and more.
Another hugely popular annual event, the 29th Annual Blue Crab Festival, takes place in Little River this Saturday and Sunday. You can buy tickets at the North Myrtle Beach Chamber of Commerce. Tickets purchased in advance are $3 for one day and $5 for two days. Tickets purchased at the gate are $4 daily. This event is a past winner of the Sun News’ Best of the Beach category in Best Annual Event or Festival. Visit www.BlueCrabFestival.org to peruse the myriad events taking place at this biker-friendly festival, being held on Water Front Avenue in Little River.
This isn’t just about crabs; it’s about so much more. This weeklong series of cultural events (running through May 23rd features trolley rides through the city, with destinations at a wide variety of wine/beer tastings, culinary happenings and more all built around the Lowcountry’s proud tradition of coastal cuisine. This is a chance to see the upscale side of the beach and find out what the southern cooking is all about. All proceeds from this event go to fund future events. A portion will be reinvested into promoting our town’s future, via donations to the Horry Georgetown Technical College Culinary School and the Clay Brittain Hospitality Program at Coastal Carolina University.
Now get out there, Uncork, Taste, and by all means boogie.
The last paragraph is about coastal uncorked and tickets are on sale at coastaluncorked.com!
