Weekend Outlook: Gordon Lightfoot at the Alabama Theatre

Weekend Outlook: Gordon Lightfoot at the Alabama Theatre

By Lauren Poster

Sundown better take care and come fast, because the quicker it gets here, the closer I am to Gordon Lightfoot (pictured). The seasoned singer/songwriter performs at the Alabama Theatre Friday night. Perpetrator of the “Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” “If You Could Read My Mind,” and the hauntingly jangly love-gone-wrong tune “Sundown,” Lightfoot, now in his seventies, finally knows why he’s been writing songs you could play from a stool for the last 40 years. That’s thinking ahead, Gordon. Call (843) 272-1111 for tickets. This one is not cheap, but it’ll probably be worth it. The last “mature” performers I saw at the Alabama Theatre were the Kingston Trio, and they burned their banjos up. So don’t count this one out, kids.

Shock rocker Ted Nugent calls on the House of Blues Saturday night, so if you’re ready to amp things back up by then, that’s the ticket. Or you can check out Blues Traveler at Celebrity Square in Broadway at the Beach. Not only does John Popper (whose name always reminds me of jalapeno poppers) play a mean harmonica, the band is donating a portion of proceeds to the Myrtle Beach Fire Department. So if anything does in fact burn this weekend, we’re covered.

Conway’s Riverfest, on the historic Conway waterfront, happens Saturday from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. You can enjoy live music, a beer garden, local art, and more – and this one is totally kid-appropriate.

Prestwick hosts a golf tourney at 11:30 p.m. on Saturday as well, with an entry fee of $90 that covers the game, lunch, dinner, prizes and cocktail hour. Proceeds benefit the Myrtle Beach Community Kitchen. Non-golfers can attend peripheral events at a cost of just $35, so everyone can help.

The summer is finally at full steam, so come on out and explore the Grand Strand’s awesome scene for music, golf and more this weekend.
