Weekend Outlook: Laugh Again with Gaffigan

Weekend Outlook: Laugh Again with Gaffigan

Back in the day, the world of stand-up comedy had the likes of Lenny Bruce, George Carlin and Richard Pryor to deliver “edgy” humor. “Edgy,” of course, came in the form of graphic language – or, as Carlin so famously referred to them, the “Seven Words You Can’t Say on Television.”

And while the boundaries of language the FCC allows on television have stretched considerably since then, today’s most popular comedians still seem to compete for who can “out-dirty” the next.

But for every Bruce, Carlin and Pryor back then, we had a Bill Cosby who became wildly popular by keeping it clean.

In that sense, consider Jim Gaffigan the modern-day Cosby – just without the Jello-O pudding endorsement contract.

Gaffigan may as well be their pitchman now, since so much of his popular humor centers around food. When you hear his spiel on Hot Pockets, for instance, you’ll laugh hysterically – and swear off microwave delicacies for the next 15 years.

Gaffigan’s trademark approach is also heard in his high-pitched “asides” – spoken in the voice of a hypothetical, naïve and easily offended audience member offering their opinion of Gaffigan’s humor. You might also recognize Gaffigan for his role on the popular TBS sitcom My Boys.

This weekend, Gaffigan comes to the Grand Strand for a special performance at the Alabama Theatre on Saturday at 7 p.m. Tickets are available online by clicking this link.

Best of all, this show is appropriate for all ages. Bring the family, have fun – and leave the earmuffs at home!
