Weekend Outlook: Uncle Kracker and the Sun Fun Festival

Weekend Outlook: Uncle Kracker and the Sun Fun Festival

By Lauren Poster

With the big, bad bike weeks behind us, the summer is getting downright nostalgic this weekend with the return of the annual Sun Fun Festival, a time-honored event in Myrtle Beach since 1951. This is the longest-running event in area history, used to kick off the beginning of the summer tourist season in Myrtle Beach.

The Sun Fun Festival features a pageant (this year’s Miss Sun Fun was selected last Sunday at Socastee High School) and in the past included parades, sand castle contests, and even local “laws” enforcing a penalty if attendees were found not wearing shorts or a bathing suit. This year the venue has changed slightly, and most of the main events will be held at Grand Park in the Market Common; highlights include meet and greets with Disney and CBS stars, as well as a concert with Uncle Kracker on Saturday night.

Of course, as with any big celebration at the beach, there will be fireworks. Also, H2X Racing’s APBA National Jet Ski Championships will be held oceanfront between Damon’s and the Springmaid Beach Resort Friday through Sunday. Check out the Sun Fun Festival Web site for a full list of events.

If you’re looking for anything else to do this weekend, go visit a local restaurant like the Flamingo, or head out to Pawleys Island to enjoy a peach-flavored beer at Quigley’s. We’re seeing the last of the placid weather before the intense heat wave of the real summer begins, so go outside - a lot. And visitors, please, stop wishing for hurricanes. They’re a real bummer.
