This weekend, Conway’s Theater of the Republic continues its run of The Producers, Mel Brooks’ zany comedy about an uptight accountant and a down-and-out producer who team up to make big bucks – by producing the worst musical ev er. This classic piece of theater is sponsored by Time Out! Bar and Nightlife, and features hilarious musical numbers nestled within a plot that somehow manages to find Hitler in a comedic turn. The play runs through this weekend, with evening shows through Saturday and a matinee Sunday. Check out www.theatreoftherepublic.com for times and tickets.
Also this weekend, the Franklin G. Burroughs and Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum will be sponsoring a Free Family Day celebrating Gullah culture on Saturday. This is a unique chance to get a comprehensive look at old Southern traditions. Activities include sweet grass basket-making demonstrations, Gullah spiritual song performances, storytelling, and more. Alongside of the festivities, Gee’s Bend Quilts will be on display as a part of the museum’s regular schedule of exhibitions. Gee’s Bend is a small community off the Alabama River bank steeped in the tradition of good old American quilt-making. The quilts go far beyond their real world use, transcending into the world of art and cultural expression. Visit myrtlebeachartmuseum.org for a schedule of events and directions to the museum.
In Little River, after you’ve reveled in some fried corn on the cob at Crab Catcher’s, or perhaps won a buck or two on a casino boat, you can check out the Raku Night of Fire sponsored by Bluewaters Pottery. From 7 to 10 p.m., come out and enjoy an evening fashioning and firing your own pottery. The cost is $25 per person and $40 per couple. See www.bluewaterspottery.com for more details.
This is a great weekend for culture and clay, so get out and play!
