Will a Tough Economy Actually Help Myrtle Beach During Spring Break?

Saw a curious item on the University of Tennessee's journalism school Web site, citing one student who mentioned that she and her friends would spend their spring break in Myrtle Beach as a way to hit a beach destination while also saving some money.

Don't know how much of an indicator one comment like this can be, but it got me thinking that more college students from around the country - or at least within a day's driving distance from Myrtle Beach - might be thinking along the same lines.

It also raises some questions as to how the troubled economy might shift the dynamic of spring break visitors to the Grand Strand. Maybe I'm nuts, but it seems like the past few years have already seen it skewing a bit more toward the college student crowd.

Do you think that trend will continue this year? And how do you see that comparing to the influx of families we've typically seen during spring break? Overall, will any of this make a difference in terms of the number of visitors we'll see this time around - and, more specifically, how much money they'll bring in to the area?

Let us know what you think!
