“Super Bowl of Boatbuilding” at the 18th Annual Georgetown Wooden Boat Show
With 250 years as a working seaport, it is fitting that Georgetown sets the scene for such a spectacular display of nautical craftsmanship. On October 20 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Annual Georgetown Wooden Boat Show will feature an estimated 100 classic wooden boats alongside the boardwalk and Front Street. Onlookers can leisurely peruse and talk with the craftsmen, owners and manufacturers who are responsible for creating these amazing vessels.
If you are looking for some waterside excitement, the Wooden Boat Challenge is sure to peak your interest! With a four-hour time limit, two-man teams will race to construct a seaworthy skiff. Judged on speed of construction, quality of build and rowing ability, this competition is open to anyone with a bit of knowledge about woodworking and the determination to row across the finish line.
Whether you are skilled in the art of wooden boat building or you just want to take in the timeless beauty of these masterpieces, the Wooden Boat Show has something for everyone.
“This is the ‘Super bowl of Boatbuilding.’ Only those who have seen it can begin to understand what drives these men and their thousands of annual spectators,” said Rob Dwelley, Wooden Boat Magazine.
A variety of other fun maritime-related activities will be arranged for families and other spectators. The children’s model boat building contest is a great way to get the kids involved in the show. Other activities will include a boat raffle, maritime arts and crafts, food and music. The money raised through sales and donations will go toward the development of the Harbor Historical Association’s maritime museum in Georgetown. The show will take place on the waterfront at Broad and Front Streets in Historic Downtown Georgetown. For more information about this event, visit www.woodenboatshow.com.
