Myrtle Beach Freed From Motorcycle Tyranny!

If you had the misfortune of trying to head west on 501 on Monday afternoon perhaps you were concerned that a hurricane evacuation was taking place. Bumper to bumper from Myrtle Beach to Aynor, the mass exodus was in actuality merely the remnants of Bike Weekers finally leaving fair Myrtle Beach. As vacationers lament, Myrtle Beachers rejoice the wrap up of the two back-to-back week long festivals.

As local take a moment of silence to celebrate their new found serenity the air is no longer filled with the rumble of Harley’s, the zip of sport bikes or luckily the screaming of sirens. For each Bike Festival nearly 300,000 visitors ransacked the beaches and crowded our streets, stores and bars. 90% of lodging was completely booked, 5% higher than expected and overall policemen were busy with nearly 100 accidents, hundreds of citations and 4 fatalities.

This all being said, the influx of bikers, out-of-towners, and even GASP “yankees” was survived for yet another year. Traffic was a disaster, normally quiet neighborhoods were filled with noise and pollution, and personally I’ve seen more thongs than I ever thought possible while trying to get groceries—however, I believe Myrtle Beach has made it through relatively unscathed and ready to move on and forget the unpleasantries of the last two weeks!

Though a biker lover and supporter I for one can say I’m glad the craziness is over, the peace is restored, and thank goodness when we get back to the already congested summer traffic of Myrtle Beach. A special thanks to the many officers that gave their time and patience keeping the sanity and our streets safe during the two festivals! Locals can collectively exhale a big sigh of relief, though only momentarily for as the bikers roll out, the vacationers roll in!

Chris's Gravatar Yeah but I already miss Shaquille O'Neal and his biker posse. They popped into Hooters on 38th on Saturday night as my buddies and I were there to watch UFC. I don't know what was more entertaining, watching the fights, or seeing Shaq alternate autographs/pix for kids with turning down propositions from one bimbo after the next!

Sue's Gravatar As a local here in Myrtle Beach, I have real problems with this article. My opinion is that is will keep visitors away and I don't believe that is what the locals want. Reading the other comment shows I am not the only one that feels that way....

Libby Taylor's Gravatar Myrtle Beach was at onetime my families summer vacation spot sometimes twice a summer. Now, because of the type of people Myrtle Beach has decided it likes to attract, we will not be back. It is a shame the business community in Myrtle Beach has stuck their heads in the sand and allowed yourself to become a haven for things less than suitable for families. Speaking for not only myself but for many in east Tennessee we will not be back!

Jess's Gravatar Its more of a love-hate relationship with vacationers. When you live here and experience the shift in traffic and craziness......you long for the peaceful days of winter...yet at the same time, we love the excitement and entertainment living in a beach town holds...

Mick's Gravatar Well I was one of those sportbikes "zooming" as you say roaming the beautiful city of Myrtle Beach and acutally coming from MIAMI FL.& for me to leave the Magic City to come to SC is a big deal bacuase my city is also a major vacation spot, and no one hosts an event like you guys, so we appriciate the hospitality and generosity and warm welcome from Myrtle beach. I has a chance to talk to a few locals and well as give a few a a ride on my Hayabusa and There is no other city I would rather see this event in and thats including my own city. 700+ miles is well worth it. This is my second year doing it and cant wait till next year for my third. So until then. Take it easy MB

Sheila Townsend's Gravatar Frist let me say I've been coming to bike week for 5 years now. I love Myrtle Beach, I would love to move there. I'm not sure what the person was referring to by "the type of people MB has decided it likes to attract" meant, first of all, maybe she should of checked before planning her vacation that week, second, I'm one of those type she was talking about. What does that mean (type)??? I still take my family to MB and will continue. So, if that's the way she feels, maybe she should stay home!!!! I'm sure other bikers will agree with me. What did "that type of people" do to her???

Lisa's Gravatar I would love to know who "Libby Taylor" was making reference to when the statement about " because of the type of people Myrtle Beach has decided it likes to attract" was made.... In case she/he didn't know this is a free country and there are no restrictions on who can and cannot goto Myrtle Beach. If she doesn't/didn't like the atmosphere maybe it is better for her/him to stay in Tennessee. Also, maybe she/he should check for upcoming events in the area before traveling. I believe she was making reference to the Bike Week event(s) that were taking place when perhaps she/he was there. Be smart check for upcoming events to an area that you're traveling to before you make your reservations and maybe you will enjoy your stay when you go LIBBY!!!
