Among the most recent reader reviews of Dunes Village:
- ”We stayed two nights and loved this hotel. Incredible views of ocean. All new furnishings. Excellent bath with heater and it has a separate vanity outside the bath near a large closet. Plenty of drawer space. Full-size refrigerator and kitchen cabinets with new dishes. The hotel is located in a great neighborhood surrounded by large homes with safe parking. The rates from their website are very reasonable during off season. It is a perfect place for families looking for a winter getaway because of indoor water park with a lazy river and 2 water slides. All of the pools are 3 foot or 1 foot which is perfect for small children …” – DisneyTravel (North Carolina)
- ”You can't go wrong with this place. The indoor water park was as described and we all had a blast. We stayed in the 4-bedroom oceanfront and it was HUGE. The room was spotless. Our children, 3 and 2 absolutely loved it. The location is brilliant.” – dmleclercq (Wake Forest, N.C.)

I have found it it not worth booking in advance off season. The rates only go down and not up. With Dunes Village, even if you cancel the day after you book it you end up paying a 10% penalty.
I booked in February with every intention of going. As luck would have it, my husband has to work. I called 10 days before my arrival and they refuse to refund any money.
I will never book this hotel again. I would have been okay with paying a partial fee, but the whole night?! They have lost any future revenue from me. It's not like there is a shortage of good hotels in the area.
I hope they put that $116 to good use.... Penny Wise, Pound Foolish!
