Like Grandpa, Like Grandson

Nicholas the firefighter

When the Myrtle Beach Fire Department paid a recent visit to Ocean Bay Elementary School, it gave my son, Nicholas, a chance to see a little of what it was like for his grandfather back in the day.

Yes, even the cheap seats can produce a priceless moment.

In this case, Myrtle Beach Pelicans left fielder Willie Cabrera made a tremendous relay from the warning track to gun down the Frederick Keys baserunner you see rounding third base in the background.

Funny thing is, I got this picture by mistake. I had my Nikon D40 in prime position to get a traditional angle for an action shot, only to be thrown off by the Diet Pepsi my kid spilled in my lap. I jumped, and pushed the shutter button by accident. Here's the result.

Not bad for a $7 bleacher ticket, huh? OK, plus the $3.50 for the Pepsi, and $5 for the dry cleaning bill, but still ...

By the way, the Pelicans set multiple franchise attendance records this past weekend, with more than 15,000 fans passing through the gates of BB&T Coastal Field.

Scenes from The Market Common

It’s like that eight-year-old pair of Birkenstocks you’ll wear with just about anything in your closet. Doesn’t matter that they’re a little beat up, or that you might have a different pair or 10 on the shelf that would go better with those new khakis. Those shoes just feel right.

And that’s probably the best analogy I can use to describe my first up-close experience with The Market Common.

Except it’s not worn-out. It’s brand-spanking-new.

It’s already popular, as evidenced by the crowds that defied the rainy weather and flocked there the first few days after last week’s soft opening.

It’s unfamiliar, and unlike anything else you’ve seen along Ocean Boulevard or throughout Myrtle Beach.

But you know what? Like that pair of your most comfortable shoes, it just feels right.

To me, it doesn’t scream commercialism. It just says, “Hey, you can hang here any time … (more pics after the jump)

We’ve shown plenty of sunrise shots in this segment in recent months. This time around, we thought we’d show just how folks along the Grand Strand are taking advantage of the fantastic daybreak weather we’ve been enjoying in recent days.

With the 10-day forecast calling for mostly sunny skies and mild seasonal temps heading into Easter weekend, there’s plenty of reason for you to partake in these sun-worshipping rituals, too!

And Now, Mt. Democrat (or Mt. Myrtle, Part Deux) ...

Some 350 tons of sand were taking shape this weekend - in the form of Democratic presidential candidates Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards, outside The Palace Theatre in Myrtle Beach in anticipation of the Democratic Presidential Debate being held there on Monday. More impressive sculpting work by Team Sandtastic ...

Mt. Republican Draws Plenty of Onlookers

Emerging from his car outside the front entrance of the Myrtle Beach Sheraton Wednesday night, FOX News’ Chris Wallace gave a passing glance to the mild commotion across the street, then quietly turned and made his way through the hotel lobby. I’m assuming that when it comes to presidential races, the longtime political correspondent has heard and seen it all.

Not so for the rest of us, though, which is why gawkers and passersby were taken by the new (albeit temporary) addition to Oak Street by Team Sandtastic – the sand sculptures of each of the six Republican presidential candidates who’ll be debating each other tomorrow night, back across the street at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center:

Thank Goodness for Heated Pools!

Long Bay Resort, Myrtle Beach

With a sudden cold snap gripping the continental U.S., the snowbirds who begin their Myrtle Beach migration this week will be greeted by a little extra steam from the outdoor heated pools (like this one at the Long Bay Resort).

Not to worry, beach lovers -- temps are expected to climb back into the 60s by the weekend.

Joey Nonya of Newport News, Va. likes to process photos using “the Orton Effect,” named for Vancouver Island's Michael Orton. The effect is achieved by sandwiching a sharp image with a duplicate that is deliberately blurred or softened. The overall result is often characterized as a dreamscape, diffusion or softening glow.

This summer, Myrtle Beach was the subject of several of Nonya’s shutterbug projects, which he then posted to Flickr for the rest of the world to enjoy. Check these out, and click on each picture to view it in the larger format and experience the full effect.
